HHS to Create a National Resource Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Elders
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced plans to establish the nation’s first national resource center to assist communities across the country in their efforts to provide services and supports for older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals.
Experts estimate that as many as 1.5 to 4 million LGBT individuals are age 60 and older. Agencies that provide services to older individuals may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the needs of this group of individuals. The new Resource Center for LGBT Elders will provide information, assistance and resources for both LGBT organizations and mainstream aging services providers at the state and community level to assist them in the development and provision of culturally sensitive supports and services. The LGBT Center will also be available to educate the LGBT community about the importance of planning ahead for future long term care needs.
The LGBT Resource Center will help community-based organizations understand the unique needs and concerns of older LGBT individuals and assist them in implementing programs for local service providers, including providing help to LGBT caregivers who are providing care for an older partner with health or other challenges.
The Administration on Aging will award a single Resource Center grant at approximately $250,000 per year, pending availability of funds. Eligible entities will include public-private nonprofit organizations with experience working on LGBT issues on a national level. The funding announcement for the Resource Center will be made available on the following website very soon. http://www.aoa.gov/AoARoot/Grants/Funding/index.aspx

Research Study for Lesbian, Bisexual, and Questioning Women
I am a lesbian researcher conducting an empirical study examining attitudes, feelings, and experiences associated with being a woman who experiences attraction to members of the same sex. Historically, researchers have neglected the lives of lesbian and bisexual women, and very little research has looked specifically at attitudes and experiences that sexual minority women have based on both their sexual orientation and gender. This online survey will ask questions about feelings, thoughts, and experiences you may have had as a sexual minority person and as a woman, ways you cope with life's challenges, psychosocial well-being, and demographics. If you are a woman who is at least 18 years old and has experienced same-sex attraction, I would greatly appreciate your participation in this study.
The survey is confidential, and takes about 45 minutes to complete. After you have completed and submitted your survey, you will be eligible to enter a participant raffle awarding a $100 Amazon.com gift certificate to one randomly selected participant. If you would like to participate in this research study, please click on the following hypertext link (you may need to copy and paste the link into your browser).

They’re particularly interested in making sure the viewpoints of gay and bisexual men are represented in the study, which is why they would like to invite you to take a survey.
The survey will take no longer than 1 hour and will cover a variety of topics, including men’s roles in relationships, how you spend your time, and your expectations and experiences with sex and relationships. In exchange for your time, the researchers will reward $10 iTunes gift certificates to the first 50 participants to complete the entire survey.
To take the survey please go to the following link:

Exploring Lesbian Students’ Perceptions of Transgender People
Hello! My name is Bonnie Benson and I am a lesbian doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University. I am currently conducting research that explores lesbian students’ perceptions of transgender people. I am looking for undergraduate or graduate lesbian/queer/same-gender-loving women to participate in my IRB-approved dissertation under the supervision of Dr. Patrick H. Munley. I am writing to request that you share the information below and/or the attached flyer with students who may be eligible to join this research study.
In order to be eligible to participate, a student must:
Be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student at a U.S. college or university, Identify her sexual orientation as lesbian, queer, same-gender-loving, or otherwise woman-identified Not identify as bisexual, heterosexual, transgender, or transsexual, and Have had exposure to transgender information OR experience with transgender people personally, socially, academically, or professionally in order to be able to respond to questions about transgender people/issues.
Interested students may contact me by email at bonnie.benson@wmich.edu or by phone at (269) 718-8747 for more detailed information about the study.
Participation involves completing an informational background questionnaire and three audio-taped phone interviews (approximately 6 hours total) that I will conduct. The results may provide valuable information about the opinions, attitudes, and beliefs that lesbian students have about transgender people. I expect the results to be applicable to interventions aimed at improving the campus climate for LGBTQ students.
I welcome participation from students who have a range of perspectives about transgender people and who are diverse with respect to geographic region, age, race, ethnicity, ability status, religious/spiritual affiliation, socioeconomic class, and gender expression (i.e., androgynous, butch, femme, other).

LBGT Country Music Fandom:
Music, Sexuality, Gender, Race and Class
M/W 4:00 - 5:30
Nadine Hubbs, Assoc. Professor of Women's Studies and Music
What kinds of LGBT people listen, dance, and socialize to country music? And what kinds of country music appeal to LGBT people? The notion of queer country fandom clashes with popular images of both "queer" and "country." Queer identity is often associated with gay men, and urban, bourgeois, coastal lifestyles. Country music is linked to heterosexual white, rural, working-class, southern, and Midwestern cultures and has often been invoked as a symbol of "redneck" bigotry. Thus this seminar asks how music that too many people sounds homophobic and racist serves as a medium for multicultural queer social and sexual exchange. Assignments include country listening and readings in country music studies, social science and humanities literature on U.S. rural queers, and social theory on class.

Examines how gender shapes and is shaped by individual women and men. We draw on psychological theories, feminist theories, and the empirical research literature to examine how gender operates for women and men. The course considers ways in which gender is constructed socially; examines particular domains in which gender is experienced and performed; and examines sources of gender in biology, lifespan development, and socialization. Also counts as an elective for the Gender and Health minor.
Edge Foundation helps students with ADD/ADHD
Students! You are invited to participate in a study of ADD/ADHD college coaching.
The Edge Foundation helps college students with ADD/ADHD find highly trained, credentialed coaches to support their academic success and develop more effective organizational skills for success in college and future careers. To learn more about the impact of ADD/ADHD coaching on students' academic experiences, a study is being conducted during the 2009-10 academic year. The University of Michigan is joining several universities across the country in participating in this study, and UM students that have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD are invited to participate. Space is limited; don't delay in contacting the office of Services for Students with Disabilities for more information and to volunteer. Those who volunteer will be randomly assigned at the beginning of the Fall 2009 term to participate in one of two groups:
Group One will receive free coaching (1/2 hour each week by phone, with email follow-up if requested) for the entire year. This coaching is provided by a highly trained ADD/ADHD Edge coach and would normally cost a minimum of $3,000.00; Complete a brief data form and allow the research team to collect your GPA (your name will not be attached to the GPA); Complete two brief online surveys (one at the beginning of the 2009 year, and one at the end of the academic year) that will take about 30 minutes each. Some students may also be selected to participate in an individual interview with a member of the research team about your experiences with coaching at the end of the year.
Group Two will complete a brief data form and allow the research team to collect your GPA (your name will not be attached to the GPA); Complete two brief online surveys (one at the beginning of the 2009 year, and one at the end of the academic year) that will take about 30 minutes each; Receive a $25.00 gift card to thank you for participation. This study is being conducted at several universities across the country by a research team based at Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) on behalf of the Edge Foundation. Your participation is voluntary and will remain confidential.
