June 26, 2015: A day to celebrate progress

Dear Campus Community,

We are incredibly thrilled about the Supreme Court’s decision; it represents significant positive progress for many LGBTQ families, the community as a whole, and for our country. Marriage equality is an important step towards equity and justice not only because countless families will now have the recognition they deserve and access to the many state and federal benefits of marriage, but also due to the cultural significance of having our relationships recognized legally. This ruling supports a better climate at our university and in our state, and will directly affect our ability to attract students, faculty, and staff who want to live in a place where their families and relationships are supported.

There is more ahead for all of us in moving toward equity in every other respect for LGBTQ people but it’s important to celebrate the efforts of the hundreds of thousands of people across the country who have worked tirelessly for marriage equality in the states and federally. We also want to thank fellow Michiganders April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse for representing our state in pursuit of this historic case. This is a huge milestone and a great opportunity for all of us to gear up for the work ahead.
