University of Michigan Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Faculty Alliance
In 1992 a university-wide group of faculty and deans formed the University of Michigan Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Faculty Alliance (UMFA). Activities address:
- University policies. We work on University policies that affect faculty, staff and students with same-sex orientations.
- Students’ academic needs. We help University units meet the academic needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students.
- Curriculum. We work on curriculum development. Issues of sexual orientation are relevant to curricula and the teaching process across the University.
- New faculty support. We try to address the needs of new faculty — providing them with social support on their arrival and with advice and support for scholarly work on lesbian and gay issues.
Each fall UMFA hosts a reception for faculty. Activities during the year depend on current issues at the University relevant to LGBT faculty. Much of our communication occurs through an E-mail group. To join the listserve group, send a message to umfa-mail-request@umich.edu—use the word SUBSCRIBE as the subject.
