Spectrum website lead Sagar elected president of LSA Student Government

April 16, 2013

Sagar Lathia is a fourth year student who has been working at the Spectrum center since last September as the Website Development lead. Throughout his entire college career, Sagar has been an active voice for the LGBTQ student community. His brother, Bhavik Lathia, is the April Alumni of the month of the Spectrum Center who helped develop the 2011 MBLGTACC conference here at Michigan. Sagar plans on staying for a fifth year to finish off his business degree from the Ross School of Business, as well as his economics degree from the college of Literature, Science, and Arts (LSA).

Throughout his undergraduate career, Sagar has been an active and engaged member of the Michigan community. He started off within the Residential College program and soon got very involved in several organizations, such as The Michigan Foods Initiative and RC players. During his sophomore and junior years, Sagar was very involved with the Indian dance community on campus and joined the University of Michigan competitive Raas Dance team, traveling across the country and competing in different competitions.

One of the biggest extracurriculars that Sagar has invested most of his time in is the LSA Student Government (LSA SG). He started his involvement in LSA SG during his freshman year and quickly moved through the organization. He held an associate representative position, a vice-chair position for the Student Advisory Panel to Academic Advising, a chair position with the Student Advisory Counsel to Department Affairs, and was a member of the Executive board last year in his role as the treasurer.

He just ran in the elections for LSA Student Government President in March, and won the position for the 2013-2014 school year. Sagar, alongside Kendall Johnson, the vice-president of the LSA Student Government, won on a platform centered around the idea of increasing diversity and collaboration with ethnically, ideologically, socio-economically, and religiously diverse organizations on campus. As the Spectrum Center openly invites and and celebrates all intersections of identities, Sagar hopes to use the relationships he has built within it to increase communication and awareness between legislative bodies and student education/support centers such as the Spectrum Center.
