One week during the month of March is dedicated to celebrating diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions through various student-led programs and events. This year the Spectrum Center is highlighting Spring Pride Programs being brought to you through LGBT Health Awareness Week and the Coalition for Queer People of Color’s March Symposium. All Spring Pride Week events are listed below and pages have been created to specifically view events for taking place for LGBT Health Awareness Week and the Coalition for Queer People of Color’s March Symposium.

Wondering what it means to be trans, ways being trans may affect one’s daily life or health, or how you as a future provider can be supportive of trans identified patients? During this panel several trans men from the community will share their perspectives on how to be a trans ally, their stories of coming out, and their experiences interacting with health care providers.

OUTbreak presents a critically acclaimed documentary about the issues faced by LGBT elders in long-term care settings. The film “Gen Silent” has been featured in film festivals across the country and examines issues of aging, access to care, and identity that produce unique health experiences for LGBT elders. Dinner will be served during the film’s screening with discussion to follow.

Turntable Takeover: Musical Alliances among Queer Women of Color
A Public Lecture and Performance Featuring DJ Emancipacion and DJ Rumorosa

DJ Emancipacion and DJ Rumorosa are among the leading DJ’s and musicians of the San Francisco Bay Area’s queer club scene. They are also community-based activists committed to racial, class, gender, queer, and anti-war based movements. They will discuss the significance of mixing and performing music to building queer community-based alliances and the development of gathering spaces for queer women and trans people to gather. Their lecture will be followed by a performance.

Reconstructive Surgeries for Transgender Individuals

Dr. William M. Kuzon, Jr. is the Reed O. Dingman Professor of Surgery in the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan and conducts gender reconstruction surgeries for transgender individuals. He has been the Section Head for Plastic Surgery since 2001 and directed the Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Program at Michigan from 2001-2010.

Dr. Bauermeister is Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, and Director of the Sexuality & Health Research Lab at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. His primary research interests focus on sexuality and health, sexuality-related health disparities, and interpersonal prevention and health promotion strategies for adolescents and young adults. He is Principal Investigator of several projects examining HIV/AIDS risk among young men who have sex with men and other health-related disparities among sexual minorities.

Dr. Halperin is the W. H. Auden Distinguished University Professor of the History and Theory of Sexuality at the University of Michigan, where he is also Professor of English Language and Literature, Women’s Studies, Comparative Literature, and Classical Studies. He is the author or editor of ten books, including One Hundred Years of Homosexuality (Routledge, 1990), The Lesbian and Gay Studies Reader (Routledge, 1993), Saint Foucault (Oxford UP, 1995), What Do Gay Men Want? (U of Michigan Press, 2007, 2009), Gay Shame (U of Chicago Press, 2009); and How To Be Gay (Harvard UP, 2012).

This workshop is open for anyone, but will focus on how women can become DJ’s. The purpose is to de-mystify the art of DJ-ing since popular culture tends to define DJ-ing as an exclusively male art form. The workshop will introduce participants to the art of DJ-ing, providing hands on information and experience. For instance, participants will learn about DJ terminology, equipment, and instructions for when one first gets offered a gig.

Workshop Instructors: DJ Emancpadion (rjemancipacion.com) draws inspiration through sound from people’s movements for freedom and liberation. She takes you on a journey through Africa (her homeland) via Chicago (her birthplace), tracing tribal roots, future dubs, and lots of soul.

DJ Rumorosa's sound is Tropical and Nuevo Latino with an emphasis on the Cumbia dissemination from Colombia to Peru, Argentina, Chicano, and Mexican Cumbia. She also focuses on electronic/ soulful house, international and classic hip-hop, reggaeton, dancehall, salsa, disco and funk and music that moves the body and soul.

Randy Roberts Potts “Miracles and Mendacity”

Randy Roberts Potts, a former social worker and middle school English teacher, is a freelance writer who wrote about his coming out experience as the grandson of televangelist Oral Roberts in the re-cent It Gets Better book. He is also the man behind the “The Gay Agenda” project, a performance art piece touring the Bible Belt in 2012. Randy will speak on issues of being gay and Christian.

A social and support group for transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, and TG-questioning people and those who transgress gender binaries. This safe, open, and affirming space includes discussion and fellowship. Trans-friendly family, friends, and significant others are also welcome. Expert panelists include Kenyon Farrow (formerly of Queer for Economic Justice), Maya Rupert (National Center for Lesbian Rights) and Jack Harrison (National Gay and Lesbian Task Force). The event will conclude with small group discussions and a catered reception.

In 2004, Michele Bachmann proposed that Elton John’s influence in The Lion King forces a gay agenda upon impressionable children. This, and other quotes from leading republicans, has raised concern from many groups over the effects of a GOP presidency on LGBTQ rights. In honor of Spring Pride week and the upcoming election, Stonewall Democrats presents an evaluation of the presidential candidates and how they would impact the LGBTQ community. The event will feature comedian Jenny Gustafson of UM’s COMCO, an Organizing for America representative, and free food.

Inside Out: Portraits of Transgender Children

Photographer Sarah Wong will travel from Amsterdam to speak about her work with gender variant children in The Netherlands. In her country, transgender people are treated with compassion and acceptance when it comes to social acceptance and medical treatment. Sarah’s photographs chronicle young children who have come of age in this environment and reveal the drastic impact such support can have on one’s happiness.
