Interested in expanding your knowledge of LGBTQIA2S+ identities and topics? Want to increase your knowledge of inclusive practices? Our Education & Training team facilitates workshops for students, faculty, and staff, focused on best practices, using affirming language, and developing skills to interrupt homophobia and transphobia.

Offerings

A 2-hour workshop on the basics of pronouns and their usage. Participants will have the chance to practice using different sets of pronouns and work on bystander intervention skills.

Learning outcomes

  • Learn what pronouns are and be able to share why they are important in their own words;
  • Identify the correct pronouns in various sentence structures;
  • Practice different methods of addressing harm using a tool called scripting (coined by author Ritu Bhasin);
  • Use an action planning resource to develop one tangible, actionable goal related to their increased inclusivity around pronouns.

Important information

A 6-hour workshop that aims to deepen our U-M community's understanding of, and ability to engage with, LGBTQIA2S+ allyship. In Towards Solidarity, we move beyond basic conceptualizations of allyship and challenge participants to center liberation as they show up actively for LGBTQIA2S+ communities.

Learning outcomes

Through this workshop, participants will:

  • Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity, a developmental, intersectional, and active set of practices;
  • Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities;
  • Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels;
  • Identify inclusive practices, skills, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities, particularly at U-M;
  • Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives.

Important information

  • This workshop may be requested over two three-hour days or one six-hour day.
  • Participants are expected to complete our Introduction to LGBTQIA2S+ Communities and Identities webcourse before attending this workshop.
  • Requires at least a 3-week lead time.
  • This workshop is only available in-person.
  • 20-35. 20 participants minimum.

Workshop and training durations are fixed and we're unable to accommodate requests to shorten them.
