In an insightful op-ed in Inside Higher Ed, University of Michigan expert Nicholas Henricksen offers practical strategies for Romance language educators to create more inclusive classrooms. Henriksen, a professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Department of Linguistics, explores how Romance languages are taught within the U.S.—and reveals a possibility model that acknowledges and respects nonbinary people and identities. Some of these include using gender-neutral pronouns where possible, fostering open discussions about language and identity, and staying informed about ongoing changes and debates within the language communities.

Henriksen’s engagement with this work builds on longstanding collaborative efforts within the department. Over the years, initiatives like workshops led by Spectrum Center staff have empowered faculty and committees to pursue greater inclusivity in language teaching—support and collaboration that have been especially meaningful during this process.
