Celebrating 55 Years of Action and Resilience with Spectrum Center

For 55 years, we've built community with and for students of all genders and sexualities, advocated for a more just and equitable campus, and enhanced the sense of belonging experienced by queer and trans Wolverines.

Generations of student leaders and activists, alumnx, staff, and supporters have shaped this space, united by the belief that everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and empowered.

All of us deserve a place to belong.

Whether Spectrum was a home for you, a place of learning, or a cause you supported, we invite you to celebrate 55 Years of Action and Resilience with us. Your participation will inspire the next generation of leaders, advocates, and changemakers.

Events

During the 2026–2027 academic year, Spectrum Center will celebrate our 55th anniversary with a series of signature events honoring our legacy as the first gender and sexuality resource center established on a college or university campus.

The Belonging Project

Column 1

The Belonging Project is a portrait and storytelling initiative that captures how students, staff, faculty, and alumnx across the University of Michigan have experienced and shaped belonging through the Spectrum Center. Grounded in the idea of “55” as a symbol of change, movement, and self-determination, the project centers stories of becoming.

Through professional portraits and personal reflections, participants will contribute to a living archive that examines how belonging is not simply found but built, redefined, and extended to others over time.
